Clean Air Webinar — Air Quality Considerations: Traffic Emissions

Our latest Clean Air Webinar examines the effects of traffic emissions on air quality. Our speakers explore transportation policies and air pollution in cold climates, ambient trends related to vehicles, and emissions measurements and management, providing insights into how vehicular emissions can impact air quality. Watch the recording below.

Speakers:

  • Vahid Hosseini – Simon Fraser University
Vahid will speak about transportation emission estimations and air pollution dispersion modeling in Edmonton, which is used to analyze transportation policies and their implications on local air pollution in cold climate cities.
  • Kevin McCullum – Alberta Capital Airshed
Kevin will speak about ambient trends in the ACA region related to vehicles, primarily based on the traffic patterns and patterns of monitoring data.
  • Ann Baran – Clean Air Strategic Alliance
Ann will present on the CASA ROVER III project, which measured emissions from the in-use on-road transportation sector, particularly diesel-fuelled trucks, to inform management actions and/or next steps for transportation emissions management in Alberta.

Presenter Bios

Vahid Hosseini is an Associate Professor at SFU’s School of Sustainable Energy Engineering in Surrey, British Columbia. He earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta with a specialization in combustion-generated emissions in 2008. His experience includes roles as a research associate at the National Research Council Canada, an instructor at Carleton University, and positions as Assistant and Associate Professor at Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, Iran. Additionally, he served as an adjunct professor at the University of Alberta in Edmonton before joining SFU. Vahid’s primary research focus revolves around emissions and air pollution stemming from combustion sources, particularly within the transportation sector. He delves into the impacts of decarbonizing the transportation industry on local air pollution within communities.
Dr. Kevin McCullum is ACA’s Data Manager and Chief Scientist. He is a Senior Engineer, with a specialty in environmental monitoring and modeling. His current focus is on air quality data analysis and interpretation, monitoring sensors, as well as dispersion and transport modeling. Kevin works closely with universities teaching Engineering and working on joint monitoring partnerships and monitoring research.
Ann Baran grew up in rural Southern Alberta, and previously worked as a Registered Nurse. Upon leaving her career, she became involved with environmental issues, primarily air quality. Ann is a member of the Southern Alberta Group for the Environment and is currently the Rural NGO representative on the Clean Air Strategic Alliance Board of Directors. She has been involved with several CASA projects in her time as a member, and is currently the NGO Co-Chair on the CASA ROVER lll Project Team. Ann will be joined during the Q&A session by Katie Duffett, Senior Project Manager at CASA, and Lead Project Manager for the CASA ROVER III Project Team.
