The Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) is the primary minister-led intergovernmental forum for collective action on environmental issues of national and international concern. The CCME National Air Quality Management System (AQMS) is a comprehensive approach for reducing air pollution in Canada.
The Canadian Ambient Air Quality Standards (CAAQS) are the drivers for air quality management across Canada. Industry associations, non-governmental organisations and Indigenous organisations participate in the development and review of CAAQS.
The National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) is Canada’s public inventory of releases, disposals and transfers. It tracks over 320 pollutants from over 7,000 facilities across Canada. Reporting facilities include factories that manufacture a variety of goods, mines, oil and gas operations, power plants and sewage treatment plants.
The NPRI information collected through the facility owners and operators serves to:
- help Canadians understand pollutants releases in their communities
- encourage actions to reduce pollution
- help track progress
